Southdowns top prize lists at Winter Fairs

Southdowns were once again at the forefront of the prizewinners at many of the major winter fairs in late 2014, with Southdown sired lambs taking top tickets at the English Winter Fair, Stafford, The Royal Welsh Winter Fair, Builth Wells, The East of England Smithfield Festival, Peterborough, and the South East Winter Primestock Fayre, Ardingly.

At the English Winter Fair, Stafford, a pair of purebred Southdown lambs from J C Dixon, Leicestershire, took the red rossette in the AOB Native sired lamb class before going on to be tapped out as the best Native purebred lambs by judge Rob Rattray. Robert Cox, Loughborough, also fared well, taking both first and second place with his Southdown carcasses.

Then at the Royal Welsh Winter Fair Katherine Price and Lyndsey Parry had an excellent show with their pair of trimmed Southdown lambs, taking the Lowland purebred championship.

Messrs Wakeham-Dawson and Harmer stood first in the untrimmed class of Southdowns, with the Humphrey family faring well in the Butchers weight section too.

In the carcass classes the Humphreys collected a red rosette with their pair of Southdown cross carcasses, with the Wakeham-Dawson and Harmer family also winning with their single carcass.

The East of England Smithfield Festival saw David and Linda Wadland’s pair of Southdown cross lambs win the overall native lamb championship after the couple picked up the red tickets for both the trimmed and untrimmed Southdown classes.

In the carcasses Messrs Wakeham-Dawson and Harmer were first in the native class with their Southdown cross, while the same exhibitors also picked up the prize for the best purebred native lambs.

November’s South East Winter Primestock Fayre at Ardingly saw the Wakeham-Dawson and Harmer team to the fore again, collecting the native lamb championship with their Southdown cross lambs as well as winning the show’s overall carcass championship with a Southdown cross.

Southdown National Show 2013

This year's Southdown National Show was held at Suffolk Show on 29th May and was once again a tremendous success with exhibitors and spectators coming from far and wide to enjoy an excellent say's competition.

Strong entries in all classes gave judge Jim Cresswell a tough task, with the largest class of the day being an entry of 24 shearling ewes. Mr Cresswell said it had been an honour to judge this year's National Show, particularly so on his home patch. "There was tremendous quality throughout the sheep today and it was no easy job to find the winners of each class, let alone the champions. Everyone connected with the breed should be proud of the show of sheep here today."

As his champion Mr Cresswell tapped out Sophie Arlott's aged ram, a three shear East Dean tup, East Dean 10/00083. This tup is sired by Gunton 09/01309 and is out of an East Dean ewe.

Southdown Success at 2013 primestock shows

Southdown sired lambs have once again been at the top of the tree at the recent round of winter primestock shows, with a number of top titles collected by exhibitors.

At the East of England Smithfield Festival, Peterborough, lambs from the Long family, Ashford, Kent, led the way for the breed, picking upthe reserve overall native lamb championship with a pair of Southdown x Beltex cross lambs as well as the purebred native championship with a pair of Southdown whether lambs.

The Long's reserve overall native lambs were sired by their French bred stock tup TC10187 'Sarkozy' and weighed in at 43.5kg apiece, while their purebred title winners were by the same sire and tipped the scales at 42kg each.

In a remarkable feat the same exhibitors won all three classes for Southdown sire lambs, picking up first in the untrimmed class with a pair of Southdown x Suffolk cross lambs, as well as first in the purebred trimmed and crossbred trimmed classes. Second spot in the crossbred trimmed class went to a pair of lambs from David and Linda Wadland, with second place in the trimmed purebred class going to Robert Cox.

Best of the Southdown sired carcasses at the show was a Southdown x Beltex carcass from Messrs Wakeham-Dawson and Harmer which graded E3L and weighed 22kg deadweight. This one stood second in the native carcass class.

At the Royal Welsh Winter Fair the Southdown sired class was won by Katherine Price and Lindsay Parry with a pair of lambs bred by Lesley Mead which weighed 96kg. Second here went to Stephen and Paul Humphrey.

Meanwhile, the Wakeham-Dawson and Harmer partnership again triumphed in the carcass classes, taking a first prize ticket with a Southdown sired carcass which graded E3L.

The Long family were on top form at Ashford Cattle Show too, taking the Native championship here with a pair of 36.5kg Southdown x Beltex cross lambs which were again by the French sire Sarkozy. And at the English Winter Fair the Longs also topped the honours in the purebred Southdown class, again with a pair of Southdown whethers by the same sire. Second here went to Robert Cox.

The South East Primestock Winter Fayre Messrs Wakeham-Dawson and Harmer took the reserve overall championship with a pair of Southdown-sired lambs.
